1-30-2004 -- My New Home

Before I left home for college my parents told me this was going to be one of the most exciting times of my life.  As usual, my parents were right again.  My first semester of college has been a blast, despite numerous tearful phone calls home!   In the beginning, there were many adjustments: being away from home, living with a roommate for the first time, meeting all new people, and, of course, starting classes.  Soon I realized I wasn’t alone- all freshman deal with these issues.  However, by attending a smaller college it’s much easier to cope with these new experiences.

Here are some of my floormates with Rev. Paul
Dugan, S.J., who is a counselor-in-residence on
my floor, Frisch 1.  They are (from l-r): Ashley,
Jenna, Breanne, Fr. Dugan, Amy and Shawn.

Canisius has Freshman Orientation sessions throughout the summer.  Orientation isn’t just about becoming familiar with your new campus, taking entrance exams, and meeting your advisor; it also gives students an opportunity to meet their future classmates.  Most of my friends, including myself, met their roommates at orientation.  I’ve found that it’s not hard to meet new people at Canisius because of all the student activities held every week. My favorite event is Java Jams, where local comedians and bands perform in a fun and relaxing coffee house-type atmosphere.

As a first semester freshman, going into my first college class was definitely scary because I had no idea what to expect.  Soon my fears were eased because even though college courses are more demanding than high school, professors really do want you to succeed.

Overall, my experience at Canisius has been great so far.
Here I am with some friends doing an ice breaker
during a leadership conference the college sponsored
on Saturday, January 24.
The first semester was definitely a huge transition, but after adjusting to my new environment in a new city, making new friends, and completing my first college courses, I know college will be an exciting ride.
