The Canisius Adolescence Education program allows students to progress from observing excellent teachers to instructing individual pupils, from teaching small groups to leading a whole class. The nationally-recognized program certifies graduates to teach a specific subject at the junior and senior high school level, grades 7-12.
The Canisius AdvantageWhile most colleges focus on meeting New York State requirements, Canisius is committed to exceed them. Field experience in middle as well as high schools broadens students’ exposure to different academic environments. By adding just two courses in middle childhood education, graduates can qualify to teach grade 5 and 6 as well as middle and senior high school.
Additionally, adolescence majors come close to earning a dual major in education plus their academic discipline and can formally do so in history and English. The nine subject areas for certification in Adolescence Education are English, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, social studies, French, Spanish and German.
Program OverviewCandidates are encouraged to participate in the urban community in which the college is located and, through a variety of field experiences and service-learning opportunities, to interact with an ethnically, racially, culturally, religiously and intellectually diverse population. Collaborative projects allow students to learn from others, develop a professional orientation, and assume positions of responsibility and leadership.
Through the Adolescence Education program, you will learn that your own contributions to improvements in schools and classrooms, however small or subtle, make you a leader. After all, Canisius is the place where leaders are made.
