Who Should Get the Vaccine
The Center for Disease Control recommends vaccination against 2009 H1N1 influenza for the following initial target groups.
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons aged 6 months to 24 years
  • Persons aged 25 to 64 years who have chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems.
  • Health Care Workers
  • Emergency Response Personnel
  • Persons who care for or live with children younger than 6 months of age
These groups are more likely to get sick if exposed, transmit disease to others, or develop serious complications as a result of sickness.

Types of Vaccines
The 2009 H1N1 vaccine can be administered as either a shot or by nasal spray.  For detailed information about the vaccines go to General Information about 2009 H1N1 vaccines at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/general.htm.

Where to Get the Vaccine
The best place to obtain the 2009 H1N1 vaccination is from your doctor.  Contact your primary care provider to ask if he/she will be providing vaccination. Schedule your vaccination there as soon as possible.  Consider getting your vaccination when you are home for the holidays.

Student Health Center H1N1 Vaccination Clinics
Student Health will offer H1N1 vaccinations to  only currently registered students  who are included in the CDC initial vaccination target groups listed above. Faculty and staff should receive their H1N1 vaccination at their doctor's office or at a mass vaccination clinic in their community.

Student Health has a very small supply of 2009 H1N1 inactivated vaccine ( the shot) to administer to students. Vaccinations will be given Thursday, November 19 and Friday, November 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment log onto GriffMed. Select Immunization : H1N1  (flu shot).  Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis.

Students, ages 25-64 years, who are pregnant or have a chronic medical condition that places them at high risk for complications if they get sick with flu, need to bring a medical note signed by their health care provider outlining pregnancy or  the chronic medical condition in order to receive vaccine in Student Health.  Students ages 24 years and younger do not need medical notes.

Students, ages 25-64 years, who are a health care worker or emergency response personnel or  live with or care for an infant younger than 6 months, will need to bring proof  of employment or child care responsibilities to the appointment.

Cost
There will be a $20 administration fee for the vaccination.  Payment must be made at time of appointment in cash or check.  No credit cards will be accepted.  Checks should be payable to Student Health Center Canisius College.

How to Schedule An Appointment
Students must schedule their H1N1 flu vaccine using GriffMed, the student online schedulers.  Do not call Student Health to step up an appointment.  To log on to the scheduler use your college login and password . Once in scheduler, select appointment type:  Immunization: H1N1 ( flu shot) and the date and time of the appointment you wish.  Remember there are a very limited number of appointments.

Administration Dates and Times  
Administration of vaccines will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 pm on the following days:

November 19, 2009
November 20 2009

Students must arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled appointment time and should plan for 30 minutes for screening, education and administration.

Late Policy
Students arriving more than 10 minutes late for their appointment will not be vaccinated.  This policy will keep clinic moving smoothly and ensures that all students are taken on time.

Cancellations and Missed Appointments
Students who do not show for their appointment or cancel their vaccine appointment will not be allowed to reschedule for this vaccination opportunity.  If additional vaccine is recevied by Student Health, these students can reschedule.

Faculty Notification for Missed Classes
You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your appointment at your GriffMail account, print that confirmation  to show to faculty if you must miss class for vaccination.

Addtional Vaccine Clinics
Student Health will notify all students via GriffMail as soon as possible if additional vaccine is available for distribution.  The supply of H1N1 vaccine is controlled by New York State.  Student Health has no prior information on shipment dates or the amount of vaccine that will be received. Appointments for additional vaccine opportunities must be made following the steps outlined here.

Minors
Students who are under the age of 18 years, must have a parent or guardian read the Vaccination Information Sheet and complete the screening and consent for vaccination form.  Minor students must present these completed forms to Student Health in order to be vaccinated. Minor students who do not bring fully completed screening and signed  consent forms with them at time of vaccination will not be vaccinated or allowed to reschedule.

If You Were Sick with Flu
If you were sick with a flu like illness, last spring or this fall but were not confirmed to have H1N1 by Real Time RT-PCR laboratory testing, the CDC recommends vaccination with 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine.
