Canisius Named 'Great College To Work For' For 2nd Year

The Chronicle of Higher Education honors Canisius workplace two consecutive years

Buffalo, NY – Canisius College is among the top 10 medium-sized colleges and universities to work for in the United States, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education “Great Colleges to Work For 2009 Survey.” The Chronicle of Higher Education is the number one source of news, information and jobs for college and university faculty members and administrators. The results of the “Great Colleges to Work For 2009 Survey” were based on responses from more than 41,000 employees on 247 campuses. This is the second consecutive year in which Canisius was recognized in the “Great Colleges to Work For Survey.”

Among medium-sized colleges and universities (those with an enrollment between 3,000 to 9,999 students), Canisius College is recognized for its best practices and policies in nine of the 26 categories polled. Those categories in which Canisius College was recognized are: job satisfaction; work-life balance; internal communications; perception of and confidence in fair treatment; respect and appreciation; policies, resources and efficiency; conditions of physical work space; tuition reimbursement; and housing assistance programs.

Based on the number of times Canisius was recognized in the survey’s 26 individual categories, the college was named to The Chronicle’s “Honor Roll of Great Colleges to Work For.” Canisius shares this recognition with 29 other small, medium and large-sized colleges and universities.

The Chronicle survey results are a testament to Canisius’ efforts to communicate with and engage employees in a collaborative work atmosphere,” says John J. Hurley, the college’s executive vice president and vice president for college relations. “We share this recognition with our many employees who work every day to promote the mission of the college.”

The Great Colleges to Work For 2009 Survey was administered by ModernThink LLC, a human-resources-consulting firm, which has conducted many “Best Places to Work” surveys for various groups. Participating institutions were segmented into a four-year or two-year category. Respondents to the survey were asked to answer 60 statements using a five-point scale. The questionnaire also asked respondents to rate their satisfaction with 15 different benefits; respond to two open-ended questions; and answer 14 demographic questions relating to gender, age, ethnicity, marital status, salary, tenure status and other job issues.
