ACADEMIC ADVISING - STUDENT ADVISEMENT CENTER
Location: Bagen Hall (BA) 103
Office Hours: M-F: 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Phone: (716) 888-2148
Contact: Dr. Christine Ryan, Director of Academic Advisement
Email: ryanc@canisius.edu
The Student Advisement Center takes a holistic approach to the freshman advisement process, therefore, the freshman academic advisor takes on many roles. This person is an academic role model, mentor, and friend who guides the first-year student through the academic transition from high school to college. In some cases, the advisor will also be one of the student’s first year professors.
During the orientation process, each student is assigned to an academic advisor who will answer questions and assist the student in assembling a fall academic schedule. Every attempt is made to have this advisor continue to work with the student throughout the freshman year. First-year students are required to meet with their advisor at least twice during each of their first two semesters; once at mid-semester to discuss academic progress, and again toward the end of the semester to discuss scheduling and registration. Students are encouraged to contact their academic advisors at any time during the year should academic or other difficulties arise.
We know that choosing a career, and a major in college suited to that choice, is of great importance to you and to our students, your sons and daughters. Like most of the really important issues in life, this one can be complicated, difficult, and frustrating.
Don’t be surprised should your son or daughter change majors or have trouble choosing one in the first place. Many students change majors at least once, and some change several times. Changes occur because the career plans of freshmen often look much more solid and sensible than they really are and, because Canisius students take a variety of courses in addition to their major, they are likely to find their interests and goals shifting.
Canisius graduates have gone on to many different careers. Some of them are very happy and successful in careers that might seem but remotely related to the majors they studied as undergraduates. The fact is that a degree from Canisius can lead to many kinds of graduate and professional study. The records of the alumni show this. At the present time there does exist a kind of myth that claims that each subject major leads to a very specific and exclusive set of possibilities. The truth is that the relationships between college majors and ultimate careers are various, subtle, complex and flexible.
After their first year, students who have decided on a major are assigned to a faculty member in their department. Students who have not declared a major must visit the Student Advisement Center to discuss their options.

The three major academic divisions of Canisius College (Arts and Sciences, Wehle School of Business, and the School of Education and Human Services) are headed by an academic dean and by an associate dean. Although the primary responsibilities of the deans are working with academic department chairmen and faculty and setting academic policies for the college, they also provide a variety of services for students. The academic advisement program, for example, reports to the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, who supervises the appointment schedule of the advisement program, and ensures that all freshmen meet regularly with their advisors. In addition, the appropriate associate dean must approve in writing any changes in a student’s course schedule, any waivers or substitutions on required courses, any changes in a student’s major, or any requests by a student to pursue a dual major. The associate deans also review any grievances a student may have with regard to most academic questions. They can answer any questions a student or parent may have about academics. The associate deans will also inform the appropriate faculty members if a student will miss classes for any extended period of time.

As a Jesuit Catholic college, Canisius College has throughout its history recognized the fact that Jesuit education must offer not only intellectual and academic excellence, but also full opportunity for the development of the student’s social, moral and spiritual potential. Campus Ministry is one way that Canisius College seeks to be faithful to that part of its mission. Through involvement in worship, programs of Christian service and spirituality, and justice and peace issues, Canisius students and the whole college community are invited to make both the Spirit of God and the Gospel living realities on the campus. Weekday, Holy Day and Sunday Masses are offered in Christ the King Chapel. Mass is offered throughout the school year at 11:30 a.m. daily and Sundays at 11:45 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Canisius College alumni enjoy the privilege of having their weddings in the Chapel. Campus ministers are available to meet with students to discuss both human and spiritual needs. Mini-retreats and weekend retreats are available, as well as preparation for Baptism, Communion or Confirmation. There is opportunity for volunteers to become involved in the Thanksgiving Food Drive, local soup kitchens, Operation Rice Bowl, the Grandparent Program, Spring break service trips and a variety of other projects in the local community.
Campus Ministry also offers lectures, films, symposia and videos which address issues of faith, peace and social justice. It seeks to help the community be more sensitive to problems in our world — oppression, suffering, discrimination, hatred and injustice — and to examine ways in which we can all contribute in making the world a better place.

Contact: Patricia Creahan, Director of Student Health Center
Email: creahan@canisius.edu
The mission of the Student Health Center is to educate students about the relationship between lifestyle choices today and future health and wellness. Each visit is viewed as an opportunity to assist students in becoming knowledgeable decision-makers about their health care needs and accessing appropriate health services when needed. The Student Health Center is staffed by registered nurses, a part-time nurse practitioner and a physician. Clinic is scheduled Monday through Friday when classes are in session. The Student Health Center does not provide overnight or weekend health care services.
The Health Center provides nursing assessment and care for minor, acute health problems and first aid. Students needing more extensive medical care, treatment, or services for chronic health needs are referred for appropriate off-campus care. Students with chronic health care needs will be assisted in remaining as autonomous as possible while at Canisius. X-rays, laboratory tests, pharmacy and emergency room services are also referred to local providers. Students are responsible for all expenses generated by these off-campus referrals.
Students who consider themselves disabled for any reason are encouraged to contact the Director for Disability Support Services at 716-888-3748 prior to class attendance. The director will assist students in planning for any special health needs they may have.
Health Insurance
Students must have their own health insurance coverage or purchase a sickness plan offered by the college. Information about eligibility, cost, and enrollment periods in the sickness plan is available in the Student Health Center. Canisius College provides accident insurance for all full-time undergraduates.
International Students studying on an F1 or J1 Visa are required to purchase the international student health insurance offered by Canisius College. Details about the international insurance plan are available in the Office of International Student Programs.
All students must carry proof of their health insurance coverage while on campus. Most health insurance companies issue a health insurance card for that purpose. It is also recommended that all students know how their health insurance program is administered to prevent confusion, in the event a need for health care arises while at school. This is especially important for those students covered by a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), or those needing their physician’s authorization prior to receiving health care by another provider. Canisius College is not responsible for payment of medical expenses incurred by students.
IMMUNIZATIONS AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS
All incoming freshmen, transfer and International students are required to have a completed physical examination form and immunization record on file in the Health Center. New York State Public Health Law 2165 requires all college students born on or after January 1, 1957 to demonstrate proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella.
