Buffalo, NY - Canisius University accounting students are putting their classroom knowledge to work by offering free tax preparation services to community members through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The student-run service provides complimentary basic tax return preparation for individuals with an annual 2024 income of $67,000 or less. IRS-certified Canisius students staff the program, which operates on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout tax season.
"By offering this service, our students gain valuable professional experience while making a meaningful impact on our community," says Associate Professor of Accounting Shannon Jemiolo, PhD. "This embodies our Jesuit mission, which is to use our talents and abilities in service to others."
The initiative serves a dual purpose: providing students with hands-on experience in the field while offering a valuable service to individuals who may struggle to afford professional tax preparation.
"Participating in the VITA program has taught me how to apply the technical knowledge I've learned in class to real-world tax preparation," notes Elliot Sarnov '25, a senior accounting and accounting system analytics major. "It has also helped me enhance my problem-solving skills, as every tax return presents unique challenges."
"I've learned from this experience how tax theory is used in real-world situations," adds accounting major Qin Li '25. "It has reaffirmed how crucial accuracy, moral accountability, and customer service are while preparing taxes. Working with actual clients brought to light the difficulties that many people encounter when submitting their taxes as well as the effects that tax credits and deductions have on their financial circumstances."
Sarnov points out how the experience bridges the gap between classroom theory and practical application.
"In the classroom, we learn the rules, but in VITA, I get to see how those rules come to life in real client situations," he explains. "I've learned how to navigate tax software, manage different tax situations, and interact with clients professionally yet empathetically."
Beyond the educational benefits for students, the program addresses a critical community need.
"For those who might not otherwise be able to afford expert tax preparation, the VITA program offers trustworthy, free tax assistance," notes Li. "This lessens financial strain and fosters economic stability by ensuring that taxpayers get the credits and refunds to which they are legally entitled."
Canisius faculty prepare students for their VITA experience with comprehensive training on tax laws, software, and ethical considerations. Students receive IRS certification before working with clients.
