The Canisius University Joseph J. Naples ’41 Conversations in Christ & Culture Lecture and Performance Series presents Brian D. McLaren on Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room North of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. McLaren’s talk, entitled “A Vatican II for Protestants?” is free and open to the public.
McLaren is an author, speaker, activist and networker among innovative Christian leaders. He has written more than a dozen books including A New Kind of Christianity, A Generous Orthodoxy, Naked Spirituality and Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha and Mohammed Cross the Road? McLaren has contributed articles, columns and interviews to many periodicals, including Leadership, Sojourners, Worship Leader, and Conversations. He has been profiled in Christian Century, Christianity Today, and The Washington Post, among others. Time listed him among 25 most influential Christian leaders in America.
In 1982 McLaren helped form Cedar Ridge Community Church, an innovative, trans-denominational church in the Baltimore-Washington region. In 1986 he became the church’s full-time pastor and served until 2006. For more than 25 years McLaren has actively mentored church pastors and has assisted with the development of several new churches. He often speaks nationally and internationally for campus groups, seminaries and clergy and leadership conferences. McLaren’s lecture topics include the gospel and global crises; theology and postmodernity; liturgy, preaching and spiritual formation; and faith and social justice.
The Joseph J. Naples Conversations in Christ and Culture Lecture and Performance Series fosters conversations about important issues involving the relationship between Christianity and culture. It promotes cooperation and understanding across religious, gender and ethnic lines. The lecture series is sponsored by the Canisius University Institute for the Global Study of Religion (IGSOR) and the generosity of the ecumenical community of Western New York.
