BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University has risen to the top of Western New York’s higher education landscape, securing the title of “Best Local University” in The Buffalo News’ annual “Best of 716” contest.  The community-driven initiative invites residents to nominate and vote for their favorite institutions, organizations and businesses.  Canisius’ recognition as “Best Local University” highlights its standing as a premier, private higher education institution and emphasizes the school’s impact on students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.

“It is not only an honor to receive this recognition but a powerful affirmation of our mission to be a driving force for positive change in the region,” said President Steve Stoute in announcing the news.  “At Canisius, we educate the whole person so that our students graduate prepared to make a positive impact in their professions and to become leaders who transform the world around them.”

The “Best of 716” selection process involved public nominations and voting.  Canisius competed against 14 schools nominated in the category for “Best Local University.” After garnering strong community support in the initial round, Canisius advanced to become a top 5 finalist, alongside the State University of New York at Fredonia, the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State University and Niagara University.

Canisius University’s distinction as the “Best Local University” comes as the institution enters the second year of its strategic plan, Answer the Call.  This comprehensive six-year initiative focuses on student success through transformative learning experiences that instill values of excellence, service and principled leadership in a global context.

“Answer the Call sets forth a bold vision for the future of Canisius; one that is firmly grounded in justice and leadership, is distinctly Jesuit and supports a bright and prosperous Canisius for future generations,” President Stoute continued.  “This recognition from the Western New York community affirms that we are on the right path.”

Canisius was founded in 1870 in Buffalo, NY, and is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. Consistently ranked among the top institutions in the Northeast, Canisius offers undergraduate, graduate and pre-professional programs distinguished by close student-faculty collaboration, mentoring and an emphasis on ethical, purpose-driven leadership.
