Canisius Named a “College of Distinction”

August 19, 2014

BUFFALO, NY – For the third consecutive year, Canisius has been named a “College of Distinction” in the Colleges of Distinction guidebook. The annual publication recognizes higher education institutions, nationwide, that excel at four distinctions:

  • An engaged student body
  • Great teaching
  • A vibrant campus community
  • Successful outcomes

The Colleges of Distinction guidebook recognizes Canisius for its small class sizes, exciting academic programs, strong faculty interaction, innovative learning experiences, and for providing opportunities to students for personal development. The rankings similarly recognize Canisius for its diverse number of extra-curricular activities available to students, which include a range of speaker series, art and film exhibits, as well as musical performances and athletic events. In addition, Colleges of Distinction states that Canisius’ preparation of students not only makes them highly-valued by graduate schools and employers but engaged citizens in their communities.

Colleges of Distinction assists high school students and parents identify colleges and universities that suit individual personalities and career objectives. Because the majority of college-bound teenagers do not attend the elite, name-brand institutions found on commercial rankings lists, the Colleges of Distinction guidebook highlights four-year institutions that are considered "hidden gems." Colleges and universities are nominated as colleges of distinction by high school guidance counselors. Publishers then utilize qualitative and quantitative information about those schools, and conduct interviews and college visits to make their final determinations.

One of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York.
