Pet Proofing

Buffalo, NY - Malini Suchak, PhD, weighed in on ways people can pet-proof their homes for the holidays in a Dec. 17 story in U.S. News & World Report.

The professor and chair of animal behavior, ecology and conservation (ABEC) noted that while pet safety requires thoughtful preparation and creative problem-solving, it doesn't mean people have to sacrifice holiday traditions.  Instead, Suchak suggests some adaptations to help ensure everyone - human and animal - can enjoy the season safely.

For cat owners, Suchak says, tree safety is a particular concern.  Therefore, she recommends tethering the Christmas tree to the wall and selecting pet-safe decorations to prevent accidents.

"Cats naturally like to climb and explore high spaces," she explains, "so instead of punishing their curiosity, create an environment that keeps both the cat and the tree secure."

Suchak also advises pet owners to familiarize themselves with the ASPCA's comprehensive list of toxic plants and to keep the poison control hotline number handy, to ensure quick action in case of any unexpected ingestions during the holiday season.
