ArtsCanisius Presents Early February Events

BUFFALO, NY – ArtsCanisius presents its February events, which are free and open to the public, unless otherwise specified.

  • Monday, February 2 Meet-the-Faculty Recital at 12:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.  The performance, entitled “The Romantic Road,” will feature Melissa Thorburn, mezzo-soprano, and Karen Schmid, piano. The program will include works by Gluck and Saint-Saens, Richard Strauss and Beethoven.

Thorburn, is an adjunct professor of fine arts at Canisius and has performed nationally and internationally with such organizations as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the National Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Vancouver Symphony.

Schmid is an adjunct professor of fine arts at Canisius and has a private piano studio. She has performed nationally and internationally in recital and as soloist, and in master classes. Schmid specializes in the fortepiano, the forerunner of the modern piano.

  • Tuesday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center – Canisius welcomes the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), under the direction of Stefan Sanders. The performance will feature Daniel Pendley, BPO principal double bass. The program will include works by Schubert, Bottesini, Tomasi and Tchaikovsky.

Sanders, formerly a member of the BPO trombone section, is the BPO’s new associate conductor. This concert marks first time conducting at Canisius as the BPO’s newest associate conductor.

The ArtsCanisius series at Canisius University presents concerts by professional musicians, including members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canisius faculty, art shows and lectures by professional artists, as well as student recitals.
