February 18, 2014

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University will welcome Jeanette Franzel to campus on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, at the corner of Main Street and Eastwood Place. Franzel is a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Her lecture, entitled “Promoting Integrity of Financial Audits to Protect Investors and the Public Interest,” is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture.

Appointed to the PCAOB by the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2012, Franzel oversees the audits of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest through high quality independent and reliable audits. The organization supervises the audits of broker-dealers, including compliance reports filed pursuant to federal securities laws.

Prior to her role with the PCAOB, Franzel served nearly 23 years at the Government Accountability Office (GAO). She served as managing director of the organization, overseeing all aspects of its financial audit oversight of the U.S. federal government. During her tenure of senior executive service, Franzel also supervised the audits for large, complex agencies, as well as small programs with limited resources. She performed oversight of the U.S. government’s efforts to help stabilize the financial markets and promote economic recovery; managed the periodic updating and issuing of GAO’s Government Auditing Standards (“The Yellow Book”), which is used throughout the world; and provided extensive policy and technical support to the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions.

Accounting Today named Franzel one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the industry in 2013. She is also a recipient of GAO’s Distinguished Service Award, the American Institute of CPA’s Outstanding CPA in Government Award, and the Association of Government Accountants’ International Achievement Award.

Franzel is a certified public accountant, a certified internal auditor, a certified management accountant and a certified government financial manager. She holds a BA in accounting and Spanish from the College of St. Teresa, an MBA from George Mason University, and completed the Senior Executive Fellows program at Harvard University.

Franzel’s lecture is sponsored by the Canisius University Accounting Society and the Joseph J. Castiglia Accounting Endowment Fund.
