Buffalo, NY - Canisius President John J. Hurley presided over his final commencement ceremonies in May, when the college conferred a total of XX degrees to undergraduate and graduate students. Canisius also awarded several honorary doctorate degrees upon individuals whose life and work exemplify professional and intellectual achievement.  

Among those receiving an honorary degree was Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.  Canisius conferred the degree, in absentia, in recognition of his profound leadership since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country.  The college was among at least 20 others to confer an honorary degree upon Zelenskyy.  

Also receiving honorary doctorate degrees from Canisius: Erik Brady ‘76, retired sportswriter for USA Today and contributing columnist for The Buffalo News; Robert J. Butler, professor of English and longtime director of the All-College Honors program at Canisius; Myron, MD and Joyce Glick, founders of the Jericho Road Community Health Center in Buffalo, a Federally Qualified Health Center; Nancy H. Nielsen, MD, PhD, senior associate dean for health policy and a clinical professor at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences; George W. Scott, president of the Colored Musicians Club in Buffalo; and Hon. Shirley Troutman, associate judge of the New York Court of Appeals.
