BUFFALO, NY ― Canisius University is proud to announce that the Cullen Foundation has awarded a three-year, $115,000 grant to the Western New York Teacher Residency program in the School of Education and Human Services. The program builds on the medical school residency model in that it provides students with the underlying theory of effective teaching and a year-long residency, in which students practice and hone their skills alongside teacher-mentors in high-needs classrooms. The program includes the full year classroom apprenticeship and master’s level classes. All students also receive a living wage stipend and a subsidized master’s degree upon completion.
This is the second grant awarded to the Western New York Teacher Residency program from the Cullen Foundation. The organization previously funded the program when it was established. The continued support from the Cullen Foundation will assist with staffing and recruitment to the program.
The Cullen Foundation is an independent, private foundation dedicated to enhancing education for students in grades pre-K through 12, and the advancement of the performing arts for Erie County. It was established by John S. “Jack” Cullen, the late founder and head of Multisorb Technologies. His estate provided the funding for the foundation.
The Western New York Teacher Residency program is housed within the Center for Urban Education (CUE) at Canisius University. Launched in January 2017, the CUE collaborates with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in urban schools across Western New York. The expertise and resources of the partnership help to enhance the overall quality of the teacher education program at Canisius and provides potential teachers for Buffalo and Western New York schools. A recruitment and retention component of the program also works to enhance the number and diversity of the candidate pool.
