Canisius University became one of the first U.S. universities to commit to a new, Vatican-led initiative aimed at empowering the global Church to achieve total sustainability.
Laudato Si’ guides Catholic institutions, communities and families on ways to achieve an eco-sustainable lifestyle and society within seven years. As a Laudato Si’ university, Canisius will develop an action plan to integrally and boldly advance each of the seven goals outlined in the initiative: Respond to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor; foster ecological economics; adopt a sustainable lifestyle; offer ecological education; develop ecological spirituality; and support local communities.
The Laudato Si’ initiative was inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical of the same name. It calls for the realization of integral ecology – the idea that ecological, cultural and social issues are intertwined.
